David Attenborough about climate change
The video above featuring two audio tracks, one per ear. They tell you in your left ear the best case and in the right ear the worst case scenario of our climate development and the earth based on our action or non-action in the following 80 years. Basically the metaphorical Angel and Devil telling us his or her future from now till the start of the 22nd century. Something children born today can realistically experience in their 80s. I first thought I would be looking for something interesting on the "good" scenario, something shocking in the "it even happened then..." sense. Because of course that's what I think is more relevant to me. We will get shit fixed, right? To listen for that, I actually put one speaker of my headset up that I can focus on the content of the "good" track, because I saw the video several times but couldn't process the content with 2 voices blabbering at me and text to read. When I found nothing really interesting or shocking (the Arctic will be ice free in 2053 in the good scenario came pretty close), I feared the real message of the video was waiting for me on the "bad" track. So I listened this time, anxiously. I put the "good" track "up" and heard what the world of today's children can look like if we don't take action. A scientific prophecy if you will. One that includes a lot of assumptions but all scenarios described are more likely to come true as it's based on data. Definitely more likely than some dreamed up none-sense, preferable from a man alone in a cave (sliding into someone's DMs, ugh).
Money at the same time continuing to corrupt the hearts of people who are using it to wage wars enabled through some backwards ideology with the main intent to keep the power in their circle. Their oligarchs, their monarchs, their lobbyists, their CEOs, their humanly unprofitable non-profits, their religion, their elite circles, their etc's. But also every single person taking a conscious decision that will enable this group to continue to exploit us but more importantly our planet. Everything will be put on a tab which our children will have to pay. "Ah fuck it, as long as I'm having a good time that's alright. A little more fire, more environmental refugees, more violence. We just build higher fences and as long as the AC and food delivery works we're alright. A fucking angel will take me off this burning ship anyways, so what. My kids will come sooner, that's ok. They'll follow me." Everyone pays, including the ivory towers. I checked the time of the video and am shocked because of the shit on the "bad" track and that I am not even half way through this ride. Stupid propaganda from some rightwing, religious nutbags fueling the fire, quite literally. All crying like babies afraid they could lose their position on the social ladder and their money only to be seen as equal of someone they see as less. Because of their status, because status is money. They would rather grip the wheel and drive knowingly straight off a cliff than stop taking more than they deserve. To be equal, not to take by force and to be part of the same 8 Billion Club. All on the same metaphorical and literal ship. The ark. That needs protecting in order to sustains us and future generations. With some thought.
Back to the video. It's as expected (excerpt):
2041: Global emissions 1.5x higher than 2019
2049: First time ice free Arctic in 09/2049
2055: 30cm rise in sea level since 2000 and more frequent storms
2069: 53% of earth's land will be arid
2073: Approximately 2 million species extinct since 2000
2083: Hundreds of millions of climate refugees will stress nations in colder regions
2066: Global mean temperature exceeds 4 C above pre-industrial levels
2086: Extreme wildfires 40% more common
2088: Regions that are uninhabitable due to extreme heat will increase significantly
by 2100 in the worst case(source): Gobal temperatures would rise 5.7 degrees C. Heatwaves are 39 times more common, extreme weather events which would happen once every 100 years due to their severity could happen every year...Sea levels rise by 1.8 meters, which will be affecting around 410 million people and submerge whole areas under water (no more honeymoon on the Maldives, source) all the while many Mediterranean countries would become desert areas.
That is a world awaiting our children if we don't act. Get distracted by our none-sense TV shows and all the bullshit we buy, false idols we idolize and our 9 to 5 grind. And climate isn't saved with doing everything electrical and sustainable now. From e-cars, to AR, to VR, to robots, everything that's coming isn't enough. We need to work on the root of the problem, some of our systematic challenges, some of our outdated ideologies. Things have to evolve, evolution is inevitable and it's up to us if future iterations (of things like perspectives, art or ideologies) or generations (like animals, us) will live in something that did give inspiration to what people see as heaven (as it's hard to imagine the unseen). Or something that will more resemble something that that generation and generation has seen again and again. Various natural catastrophes, food shortages & people dying of starvation in the millions, climate migrations, diseases, war over resources (e.g. water) and the list goes on. Unimaginable disaster, suffering, pain and death. Even worse if inflicted purposeful or simply through neglect by another human being. A situation that served as inspiration for hell, or netherworld as they called it during the bronze age. Ignorance, hate, war, religion, ideologies, anything that separates us and prevents us from living in peace and collaborating to find solutions to these complex problems. Which we can, after all we evolved a brain which gives is specifically "designed" for problem solving and is the tool that let us climb on top of the food chain. Something that can enable us to find solutions and create a future for everyone. A human-made paradise on the blue ark.
We can choose. We can sit and watch the "bad" track happen and get ready to live in a world designed by Twitter Troll Elon Musk on Mars and drink our recycled piss. Or we can start thinking about what can be done now to preserve the planet that is the only place in the universe (we know of) where meaning exists. We can act, so future generations don't look back at us the same way we are looking back at the people who got us in this mess. At a time which is already descending into of war, continuous climate catastrophes, droughts, rise of extremism on all political spectrums or intangible threats of technology turning countries like Russia, China or Iran into a George Orwell novel.
Whether this is the end or the beginning is up to us.
"We need to move from thinking:
Economy > Society > Planet
to
Planet > Society > Economy
That's when we continue our evolutionary process." - Ron Garan

"25-50% of average households are unable to pay their bills this winter whilst energy companies announced recording braking profits. In 2021, Shell paid 0 pounds on their oil production in the UK and received 100 million pounds of subsidies in tax payer's money. Working people are suffering at the hands of corporate greed and unbridled economic mismanagement and this is why people are striking for better pay, conditions and job security!" - Jonathan Pie (angry reporter)
